ABOUT JATB

Well here we go - just another travel blog.

One of the most rewarding aspects of travel is to be able to "be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted,” as Bill Bryson put it. This is probably why travel memories are burned so deeply onto our mental hard drive. We approach everything with a different level of awareness, experience things more consciously.

It's also why travel stories are so fun to hear, read, share - even if we don't necessarily understand every detail. Let's embrace that pleasant feeling of lostness.

The best place to be is somewhere else.

Travel is like flirting with life

ABOUT ME

Here we go: My name is Rainer, I am a 1981 production with German-Japanese roots. I live in Düsseldorf, Germany, and job-wise I do something with media.

  • What is your favourite destination?
Impossible to single out one that trumps all. Depends on the aspect:

    • Which country has the best food?
      Japan, hands down.

    • Most impressive landscapes?
      Iceland. Raw, rugged, beautiful.

    • Historically the most interesting?
Gotta be Iran. It's that mix of ancient culture combined with the current dynamic political development.

  • Best country to ride an escalator in?
That's a weird question, but it has to be England or Japan - I've got nothing but the utmost respect for two of the very few peoples on this planet who understand the escalator etiquette.

Beautiful, isn't it?

  • What else should I know about you?
Well, as a nod to my Japanese side, I'm quite into photography. I am an equally enthusiastic and talentless footballer. I do enjoy a bike tour, a fresh sushi selection, the occasional gin, and the Internet in all its randomness.

  • I like your photography and would like to have some of it on my wall - where can I find them?
Oh, thank you for the oddly specific and kind words. You can order some photos here.

(Also, for transparency: some of the above are affiliate links, which means when you purchase something using them, I get a small kickback.)
